The state-of-the-art artillery plant is currently under construction in Unterluess– a significant step for the future of the defence industry in Germany. Here, you have the opportunity to play an active role in the development of this unique plant and to help shape innovation first-hand.
The groundbreaking ceremony in February 2024, which was attended by high-ranking representatives from politics and defence, laid the foundation for a project that sets new standards with complete value creation on site – from ammunition production and state-of-the-art automation to final packaging. The opening in August 2025 will be a double celebration: 350 new jobs will be created and production capacity will be increased by up to 350,000 rounds of artillery ammunition per year. 155 mm artillery shells have been among the most sought-after products in the defence industry for years.
Production takes place in two highly specialised buildings:
The ‘LAP building’ (Laborating, Assembly, Packaging) has an area of approximately 11,000 m² and houses the areas where the explosives are pressed into casings, finally assembled, inspected in the X-ray room and then securely packaged.
The ‘Shell Manufacturing Building’ is where all the steps involved in casing production take place: forging, rough and finish machining, heat treatment, surface finishing and painting.

Department Master Laboratory
Timo Tautorat has worked as a laboratory supervisor at Rheinmetall Waffe Munition's new artillery plant since 1 February 2025. His responsibilities include ensuring production remains within specified parameters, organising the laboratory department and guaranteeing compliance with occupational health and safety, environmental and security measures.
