Inside Rheinmetall Careers – Careers in naval shipbuilding

Full steam ahead into the future!

With the acquisition of Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL), Rheinmetall entered the field of military shipbuilding in 2026. The newly established Naval Systems Division unites four shipyards steeped in tradition, including Blohm+Voss in Hamburg, which form the backbone of Rheinmetall as a new maritime systems house. At our locations in northern Germany, we are seeking a wide range of skilled professionals, including engineers, design engineers, and technical specialists for pioneering maritime projects.

Since 1 March 2026, Rheinmetall has been active in military shipbuilding. With the acquisition of Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL), the Naval Systems Division was established. The Division brings together four highly specialised shipyards: Blohm+Voss and Norderwerft in Hamburg, the Peene-Werft in Wolgast, and the Neue Jadewerft in Wilhelmshaven. Together, they have 13 docks with lengths of up to 351 metres as well as state-of-the-art shipbuilding and workshop halls.

The strategic core: Rheinmetall is now the only German defence company covering all military domains – land, sea, air, and space. Rather than merely supplying systems and components, the Division acts as a prime contractor, delivering complete warships: frigates, corvettes, patrol boats, and coast guard vessels – from design through to delivery.

The Division's capabilities extend beyond platform construction: system integration of effectors, sensors, and command systems; fleet support throughout the entire life cycle; as well as research and development of autonomous maritime surface systems.

In the Rheinmetall Naval Systems Division, you will work on projects that shape Europe's maritime security and that of our partners for decades to come. Each of these projects requires engineers, design engineers, and many other technical specialists who take responsibility for complex systems.

The Rheinmetall Naval Systems Division offers a broad spectrum of technical and strategic roles. Whether in design, system integration, or the management of major projects – with us, you will find tasks that are both professionally stimulating and of vital importance to society.

Naval Architects & Design Engineers (m/f/d)

You design and engineer frigates, corvettes, and special-purpose vessels – from the hull structure through to detail design. In doing so, you work with the latest CAD and PLM systems on designs that will be in service for decades. Your designs must withstand extreme sea conditions whilst simultaneously integrating cutting-edge defence systems, sensor technology, and propulsion engineering. Whether structural analysis, hydrodynamic optimisation, or production-oriented design: here you combine engineering expertise with real-world impact.

System Integrators (m/f/d)

You bring together the platform, electronics, sensor technology, and command systems to form a functioning overall system. This is precisely what sets us apart from conventional shipyards and makes your role particularly demanding. You are responsible for the interfaces between hardware and software, coordinate suppliers, and ensure that radar, communications, and effectors work together seamlessly. When a ship functions as a system, that is your achievement.

In addition, we offer exciting career opportunities in many other specialist areas, including project management, planning, and Integrated Logistics Support (ILS).

From the Jade, via the Weser and Elbe, to the Baltic Sea: the Naval Systems Division is based at five locations in northern Germany. Each site brings its own strengths – and offers you a working environment that can only be found in naval shipbuilding.

Bremen/Lemwerder – Headquarters

The NVL Campus in Lemwerder, opened in 2026, offers more than 400 state-of-the-art workplaces and strengthens capacity for pioneering shipbuilding projects. As the headquarters of NVL B.V. & Co. KG, this site combines views of the River Weser with a cutting-edge working environment. The Wesermarsch region offers attractive living costs and a high quality of life between city and coast.

Hamburg – Blohm+Voss

On the Steinwerder peninsula – in the heart of the Port of Hamburg – lies one of the most renowned shipyards in the world. At Blohm+Voss, our largest shipyard, the focus is on the initial outfitting and commissioning of naval vessels. A section of our design team works directly on the shipyard premises.

Hamburg – Norderwerft

The Norderwerft has been situated in the heart of the Port of Hamburg for over 100 years and specialises in the repair, overhaul, and modernisation of naval and commercial vessels. With three floating docks spread across 60,000 square metres of shipyard area in an ideal location within the Port of Hamburg, we ensure that civilian and military fleets remain operationally ready at all times.

Wolgast – Peene-Werft

The Peene-Werft is a state-of-the-art compact shipyard in north-eastern Germany, situated directly opposite the island of Usedom. Across more than 250,000 square metres, naval vessels and coast guard boats can be built on two independent production lines. In addition, the shipyard also has a repair facility for naval vessels. A section of our design team is based at the Peene-Werft, in the East Design Office (Konstruktionsbüro Ost – KBO).

Wilhelmshaven – Neue Jadewerft

The Neue Jadewerft is located in the tide-free deep-water port of Wilhelmshaven – in the immediate vicinity of the Heppenser Groden naval base. It specialises in the repair, maintenance, servicing, and refitting of large naval vessels up to 160 metres in length, as well as civilian ships such as tankers, tugs, and passenger vessels. With four berths, 440 metres of quay length, and approximately 70 dockings per year, the shipyard ensures the fleet's operational readiness around the clock.

We are an employer that thinks long-term – and this is directly reflected in our working conditions. We offer remuneration in accordance with the IG Metall collective agreement and provide 30 days of annual leave. In addition, there is a company pension scheme, a professional development budget, a cycle-to-work scheme, the possibility of remote working, and much more.
