Inside Rheinmetall Careers – Space

A new dimension of security.

Together with our Finnish partner ICEYE, we are entering a new dimension: the space sector. Our mission: Strengthening Europe’s security through innovative and independent technologies.

You want to contribute? Become part of our mission and take on responsibility in a changing world!

We develop technologies for continuous Earth observation and automated data analysis.

With Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), we provide accurate situational awareness. Our AI-powered systems process these large amounts of data, making them directly usable.

End-to-end integrated. Automated. Ready to use.

Precise Earth observation at night and in bad conditions

The problem with previous methods

Optical satellite images do not always provide reliable information: clouds, fog or darkness impair imaging, large areas are difficult to capture in high resolution, and long data chains delay quick decisions. The result: incomplete situation reports.

The solution: SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar)

SAR provides reliable Earth observation in all weather conditions, day and night. The satellites transmit radar pulses and use the echoes to calculate precise situation reports – a high-resolution ‘synthetic aperture’.

The data flows directly into Rheinmetall command and control systems, enabling rapid decisions to be made during operations.

AI-based analysis of Earth observation data

Collecting satellite data is only the first step.

The key is to quickly extract usable information from large amounts of data.

We develop cloud-based AI and software solutions for the automated processing and analysis of satellite data, with a focus on efficient evaluation and reliable results.

Raw data is quickly turned into actionable information – reliably, automatically and scalably.

Technology that protects is created by people who get things done.

We are looking for talented individuals and experts who want to work with us on Europe's technological sovereignty – in one of the most exciting fields of the future. We are particularly looking for engineers with knowledge of system design and satellite technology, data scientists and AI developers for automated data processing and intelligent geospatial analysis, IT specialists for the development of scalable cloud solutions, and specialists from the aerospace industry. Production staff for precision manufacturing and quality assurance are also an important part of our team.

Your contribution counts!

‘I am very confident that we will play an important role in European military space technology in the future. With the support of management, our strategic partners and a strong team, the conditions for this are ideal.’

Lutz Haumann

Program Manager Space

What are you working on as part of the space project?

‘I am responsible for programme management in the space sector. My core task is to ensure that customer projects are implemented on time, on budget and to the required quality standards. At the same time, I am establishing structures and concepts that will enable us to achieve successful long-term growth in this sector.’

How did you become involved in this project?

‘Rheinmetall approached me to ask if I would like to take on the challenge of helping to build a completely new division. The task of establishing and strategically developing the space sector within the group immediately appealed to me.’

What was your first thought when you heard that Rheinmetall was now also getting involved in space technology?

‘I was immediately enthusiastic. Entering the space market usually involves high hurdles if you want to play at the top. However, given the current geopolitical situation, a slow approach is not an option. Rheinmetall has made a clear commitment to consistently build up this area now and get started right away.’

What distinguishes this project from previous developments you have worked on?

‘The project is large, complex and technologically groundbreaking. Although I was familiar with these aspects from previous jobs, we are now operating on a whole new scale here – everything is even more challenging.’

What does a typical working day look like?

‘My daily routine is heavily influenced by communication and coordination. Since all information from the projects converges in my team, I am heavily involved in coordination. A structured daily routine is essential, but at the same time we maintain enough flexibility to be able to react to the uncertainties that project business brings with it.’

Who is working on the project – which disciplines are represented?

‘Our team is interdisciplinary, covering everything from engineering and AI analysis to finance, legal and project management. We cover the entire chain – from sensors in space to ground infrastructure to data refinement and delivery to the field. We are also setting up our own satellite production facility and control centre and working closely with strategic partners who contribute important expertise.’

How would you describe the team spirit?

‘Highly motivated and international. Since space technology is a global topic per se, we work closely with colleagues in other countries and make targeted use of group-wide synergies.’

What motivates you to be part of this project?

‘I am motivated by the considerable creative freedom I have in developing this area. We are breaking new technical ground and developing systems with completely new capabilities that go beyond traditional Earth observation. In the space industry, we refer to this as the “new frontier”. We are at the beginning of a development with great potential for the future.’
