WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We require a technically strong Senior Setter to establish stable, repeatable production processes on specialised gear cutting and second operations equipment. This role demands deep mechanical understanding, process control discipline and tooling optimisation expertise.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Scope of Role
Machine Setup & Process Control
• Setup and optimise gear cutting machinery and second operations equipment to engineering specifications
• Establish process stability before batch production through first-off verification and capability checks
• Optimise cycle times while maintaining dimensional accuracy and surface finish requirements
• Interpret component drawings, tolerances and engineering layouts to ensure compliance
• Monitor machine performance and adjust parameters to maintain process capability
Tooling & Mechanical Systems
• Manufacture, assemble and maintain press tooling, fixtures and pneumatic tooling systems
• Diagnose wear patterns, tooling degradation and alignment issues
• Maintain and adjust legacy mechanical equipment requiring understanding of mechanical timing, load behaviour and backlash
• Set up and maintain Gear Hob sets and related cutting tooling
• Identify tooling improvement opportunities to improve repeatability and reduce scrap
Process Capability & Quality Control
• Conduct first-off inspections and respond to inspection feedback
• Identify process drift and implement corrective adjustments
• Maintain tolerance conformance and minimise variation during production runs
• Ensure gauges are calibrated and applied correctly per IMDS requirements
• Apply root cause analysis to recurring deviations
Maintenance & Reliability
• Perform preventative and corrective mechanical adjustments
• Escalate maintenance risks affecting machine capability
• Monitor vibration, wear and load behaviour to prevent failure and instability
Operator Training & Technical Support
• Train operators on setup conditions, critical parameters and inspection points
• Support adherence to standardised work and IMDS verification requirements
• Provide technical guidance during troubleshooting
Continuous Improvement
• Improve changeover times and setup repeatability
• Optimise tooling life and process efficiency
• Contribute to standardisation of best practices and process documentation
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU SHOULD HAVE
MINIMUM TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS/ EXPERIENCE:
• Grade 12
• Red Seal Toolmaker
• ±20 years toolmaking or precision machining experience
• Experience in high-volume precision mechanical manufacturing
• Strong experience with gear cutting, milling, presses and secondary machining processes
• Proven experience with older mechanical systems and machine behaviour under load
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and tolerance stacks
• Understanding of process capability, repeatability and scrap reduction
• Programming knowledge (advantageous)
• English & Afrikaans communication ability
