First UK-built vehicle goes to the British Army's Armoured Trials Unit.
Integration trials with Javelin are progressing.
Rheinmetall, in partnership with KNDS, has reached another major milestone in the UK’s Boxer Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) programme.
The very first Boxer built entirely in the UK has now been delivered from RBSL’s production facility in Telford to the British Army’s Armoured Trials Unit (ATU) in Bovington. Here, the vehicle will serve as a driver and crew training platform, preparing soldiers to operate, maintain and fight from this leading-edge capability.
This delivery follows the unveiling of the first British-made Boxer at the International Armoured Vehicles Conference, an event that marked the return of large-scale armoured vehicle manufacturing to the UK. Production at Telford is continuing, with further deliveries planned as part of the UK MIV programme.
Enhancing battlefield lethality
Alongside deliveries, the Boxer programme has reached another operational milestone with the successful progression of Javelin anti-tank missile integration trials. This marks a key step towards enabling the British Army to fire Javelin from under armour via the Kongsberg RS4 Remote Weapon Station. The integration enhances Boxer’s operational flexibility, providing crews with a longrange precision strike option while remaining protected inside the vehicle.
Industrial strength and sovereign capability
The UK Boxer programme continues to deliver economic and industrial benefits, supporting over 1,000 highly skilled jobs across the country and sustaining a resilient supply chain of more than 100 UK suppliers. Around 75% of each British-built Boxer is sourced from UK companies, reinforcing sovereign manufacturing capability and supporting the Government’s ambition to grow and sustain the UK defence industry.
Rheinmetall’s £56 million investment in Telford has transformed the site into a pioneering production facility, with modern fabrication lines, advanced surface treatment systems and integrated assembly lines for both Drive and Mission Modules.
Looking ahead
John Abunassar, CEO of Rheinmetall UK, said:
“The delivery of the first British-built Boxer to the Army is a proud moment for everyone involved in
the programme. It’s the start of a new training era for our soldiers and a demonstration of the UK’s
capability to design, manufacture and integrate highly advanced armoured vehicles. With the recent
Javelin integration, Boxer will provide additional operational flexibility to the British Army as it
develops its future mechanised infantry capabilities.”
The Boxer programme, delivered through ARTEC GmbH – a joint venture between Rheinmetall and KNDS – in partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence, has completed trials, with training ongoing and customer delivery ramping up, helping the Army prepare for its next generation of mechanised capability.
