Rheinmetall is considering a takeover of the shipyard in Mangalia – a new chapter for the long-established Romanian shipyard

A takeover of the bankrupt shipyard in Mangalia by Rheinmetall and MSC would open up positive prospects for the future of the Romanian shipbuilding and defence industry and mark the start of a new era. Rheinmetall AG is considering, in close cooperation with the Swiss company MSC, making substantial investments in the site and upgrading the shipyard into a dual-use hub for both military and civilian shipbuilding.

Who are Rheinmetall and MSC?

Rheinmetall is a German technology and defence group known worldwide for the manufacture of military equipment and security systems. As a cross-domain systems provider, the company plays an important role in strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities. In Romania, the Düsseldorf-based group has been represented since 2024 by Rheinmetall Automechanica, based in Medias, and the powder factory project in Victoria. With its Naval Systems division, which was established following the recent acquisition of the renowned NVL shipyards from the Lürssen Group, Rheinmetall is one of the world’s leading naval systems providers and is in particular responsible for major programmes for the German Navy.

MSC is one of the world’s largest maritime transport and logistics service providers, with an extensive network and expertise in global supply chain management.

Rescue and continued operation of the shipyard in Mangalia

The revitalisation of the shipyard in Mangalia is of strategic importance. The resumption of shipyard operations is expected to have significant positive effects on the region, contributing to the stability and development of the local business environment. The entire Constanța district and the city of Mangalia could benefit from rising revenue from local taxes and duties, as well as a significant contribution to the national budget.

In the long term, the shipyard could employ several thousand people. The development of a dual training system to qualify the workforce, as well as the establishment of a centre of excellence and research, could transform the region into a hub of expertise and encourage young people to stay in Romania and build their future here.

A production centre on a European scale

The current plan envisages that the resumption of shipyard operations will go beyond the construction of the four ships currently planned, which are to be built by Rheinmetall’s Naval Systems division. The idea is to develop Romania into a major European production hub for shipbuilding. In this context, Rheinmetall aims to attract further European and global programmes to the country, thereby strengthening Romania’s position in the defence and shipbuilding industries.

Utilisation of existing assets

Current business operations are to be continued and integrated into a modernised business model, in which existing experience is utilised and expanded, and the available capacities and resources of the existing infrastructure are further optimised.

Repositioning Romania on the map of European manufacturers

This new beginning opens up strategic prospects for the entire Romanian economy. It represents an opportunity for industrial reconstruction, the strengthening of local expertise and the repositioning of Romania on the map of European shipbuilding production.
