Since its founding in 1889, Rheinmetall has been a center of excellence for artillery weapon systems. At Eurosatory 2026, the leading defense systems manufacturer will showcase its new L60 155mm artillery system for the first time at its booth F115/F116.

Current conflicts demonstrate that tube artillery remains highly significant on today’s battlefields. The L60 artillery system was developed to significantly increase the effective range of wheeled and self-propelled howitzers. Compared to a conventional L52 gun, it is expected to achieve a range that is approximately
thirty percent greater.

To this end, Rheinmetall has increased the barrel length and the volume of the chamber in a development project that has been underway for several years. The first milestones have already been successfully achieved, allowing for the validation of the design concept to begin and the procurement of the first
barrels. The initial steps in production have already been completed. The gun system measures 9,300 millimeters in length and weighs just over 2.5 tons.

In January 2025, successful tests were completed with a maximum firing pressure of >600 MPa. The development and testing of the weapon system continued throughout 2025, with muzzle velocities exceeding 1,100 m/s achieved. The first firing demonstration is scheduled to take place in 2026.

In the field of 155mm tube artillery, Rheinmetall is not only one of the leading system integrators but also one of the largest ammunition producers worldwide. Production capacities are currently being significantly expanded.
