Optimum Protection

Besides deploying specially armoured vehicles and using defensive equipment such as jamming devices, mine roller attachments, etc., routes need to be regularly checked for explosive devices. If one is discovered it should be neutralized without detonating as far as possible in order to avoid collateral damage.

Rheinmetall has developed a number of subsystems for integration into different vehicles which enable reliable detection, verification and clearing of explosive devices. In the process, great emphasis has been placed on making them easy to use, even in difficult operating environments and high-stress situations.

In response to an immediate operational requirement of the German Army, Rheinmetall is now equipping the small, light tracked platform Wiesel 1 with the ground surveillance radar with an integrated metal detector as well as the remote control unit. The unmanned Wiesel detection vehicle is operated by two control consoles workstations integrated into an armoured transport vehicle furnished by the Army (Fuchs/ Fox 1A8).

A manipulator arm equipped with special sensors and tools has been developed for investigating hotspots such as roadsides, building façades and terrain anomalies. Together with the control console, the manipulator has been integrated also into an existing Fuchs/Fox 1A8. Moreover, the manipulator can be equipped with a rescue platform for evacuating wounded personnel from danger zones. Various other vehicles from different national inventories or suppliers could also serve as platforms.

Detection, Verification and Clearing of Explosive Devices

The remote control detection is deployed at a safety distance from the command vehicle. Sensor data are transmitted by wireless link to the command vehicle for evaluation. The detection vehicle marks suspected sites and transmits their positions to the manipulator vehicle for further verification.

Besides the verification of suspected sites, hotspots such as buildings, bridges, roadsides and culvers are checked for explosives using a stabilized sensor-equipped manipulator arm with long reach. Detected objects are exposed for identification and clearing, partly using non-contact techniques.
