The system design guarantees a high degree of realistic training through precise tuning of the subsystems in order to comply with the requirements and challenges of any live training environment. The accurate and long lasting combat training equipment allows exercises under realistic conditions, including laser-, radio- and geo-pairing-based engagement simulation of any real weapon.
Dedicated equipment for exercises of military operations in urban terrain (MOUT) can be flexibly configured and installed depending on the training area and building infrastructure. LEGATUS offers all the components to allow highly realistic training in any terrain (open and/or urban) to be carried out while keeping the benefits of a proven technology.
LEGATUS allows monitoring and recording of outdoor and indoor movements and activities of all players (e.g. soldiers, civilians, vehicles) throughout the exercise area in real time. Vulnerability of combat vehicles, buildings and people players outside and inside buildings can be simulated realistically.

Legatus Live Training System – ‘Freedom Shield’ large-scale exercise
As part of alliance defence on NATO’s eastern flank, Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH (RME) of Bremen has made a decisive contribution to the training of the armed forces.
During the large-scale exercise “Freedom Shield” conducted by 45th Armoured Brigade “Lithuania”, a fully mobile version of the live simulation system was deployed for the first time: the Rheinmetall LEGATUS Mobile Live Simulation (LEGATUS MLS). This enabled the Bremen-based digitalisation specialist to relocate the high-end training capabilities of the Army Combat Training Centre (GÜZ) directly to the Pabradė area in Lithuania.
The mobile solution comprised a self-contained server and radio container system, five 25-metre-high mobile antenna masts for wide-area network coverage, a mobile auditorium, and a fully deployable exercise control and evaluation (EXCON) system, which was networked with the home base in Germany via a reach-back procedure, enabling parallel exercise evaluation to take place both locally on site and at the GÜZ. Another technological innovation within the LEGATUS MLS framework was the first-ever, fully operational deployment of LEGATUS drones, which were fully integrated into the tactical duel simulation. Also worthy of note is the first-time integration of digital troop radio sets from the so-called MiFlexKo device family (“Multinational interoperable Tactical Communication – Voice and Data in Mission Restricted for the Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Lithuania”).
A team of up to 20 experts from RME supported the manoeuvre on site over a period of three weeks. To ensure the system and the troops were properly supported, the experts worked in overlapping shifts – and did so under challenging conditions, which included not only severe storms but also real drone alerts requiring them to take temporary shelter in bunkers.
The innovative system attracted a great deal of attention. High-ranking delegations, led by the Inspector General of the German armed forces, General Carsten Breuer, the Inspector of the Army, Lieutenant General Dr Christian Freuding, and the Lithuanian Chief of Defence, visited the RME container base for detailed system briefings on the LEGATUS MLS.
