Dr Rudolf Luz studied political science, literature, and linguistics in Heidelberg and Konstanz from 1977 to 1982, completing a postgraduate program from 1983 to 1986 at the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Konstanz. When he was awarded his doctorate in 1987, he started a two-year internship in Tuttlingen and Rottweil, which he completed with the 2nd State Examination.

Since 1989, he has worked in various positions at IG Metall. After stints at IG Metall Altstadt (1989 Secretary for the Labor Union, 1991 to1998 Second Representative), IG Metall in Bautzen (1990 to 1991 Managing Director) and IG Metall Heilbronn-Neckarsulm (1998 to 2015 First Representative), he now runs the Office of the Second Chairman of IG Metall in Frankfurt am Main and is responsible for Operations Policy there.

Dr Luz was a member of the Advisory Council of IG Metall from 1999 to 2015 as well as a member of the Negotiations Committee for the Electrical and Metal Industry in Baden-Württemberg. During the period from 1998 to 2015, he was a member of the Heilbronn-Franken District Council for AOK, alternating Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Heilbronn Employment Agency and member of the Supervisory Board for the Heilbronn Area Economic Promotion Partnership. He is the Vice-Chairman of proRegion Heilbronn-Franken.
