WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform detailed mechanical and process data analysis, root cause investigations, and implement improvements to enhance plant efficiency, reliability, and productivity.
- Design, size, and specify process/mechanical equipment (pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, vessels, piping systems, utilities, tooling, machinery, automation etc) according to project and industry standards.
- Prepare and update engineering documentation such as mechanical drawings, process Flow Diagrams, piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&ID)
- equipment datasheets, and material specifications.
- Lead and coordinate mechanical engineering activities across all project stages: design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and handover.
- Manage contractors and suppliers, ensuring compliance with technical specifications, quality standards, schedules, and budget requirements.
- Participate in and provide mechanical expertise during HAZOP studies, risk assessments, design reviews, and safety audits.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in mechanical/process systems to reduce downtime, increase energy efficiency, and optimize plant performance.
- Troubleshoot plant issues, providing first-line technical support for breakdowns, and process deviations.
- Support implementation of Process Safety Management (PSM), ensuring mechanical compliance with regulatory and company standards.
- Lead and support modification projects (MOCs) involving upgrades, debottlenecking, and optimization of process/mechanical systems.
- Support and mentor, sharing best practices in mechanical design and process engineering.
- Evaluate manufacturing process by designing and conducting research; applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling and material; consulting equipment vendors and soliciting observations from operators.
- Adheres and implements Rheinmetall Denel Munitions Policies and Procedures and ensures compliance to ISO Standards with respect to SHE/Quality/Environmental/Energy.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU SHOULD HAVE
- BSc or BEng in Mechanical Engineering.
- At least 3 years’ experience within a design, manufacturing, or industrial plant environment.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment design, selection, and maintenance in process industries.
- Familiarity with process safety, HAZOP, and risk assessment methodologies
- Working knowledge of industry standards and codes (ASME, API, ISO, SANS, SABS) related to mechanical/process equipment.
- Proficiency in engineering software/tools for process and mechanical design (e.g. SolidWorks, SolidEdge, AutoCAD or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of any of the following would be advantageous
- Project Management
- Process Safety Management
- CFD and/or FEA
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Diligent, systematic and organised approach to tasks.
- Analytical & problem-solving skills
