At the Kassel-Mittelfeld Industrial Park, state-of-the-art tactical wheeled and tracked vehicles are engineered, manufactured, and maintained—serving the needs of both the German Bundeswehr and the armed forces of allied nations and partners. Just as diverse and numerous as the orders are, so are the roles and the dynamic, multifaceted tasks performed by the teams on site.
With 1,800 employees, the Kassel site is responsible for far more than just production. Teams here contribute to a wide range of complex projects, including prototyping, logistics, and procurement. In addition, specialists from project management, engineering, and IT play a vital role in the site’s success.
Over the past few years, the product portfolio has expanded significantly. Today, nearly every Rheinmetall project is connected to Kassel. Whether it’s the production of individual components or complete vehicles, or working on integrated systems, the projects in Kassel are both demanding and highly engaging.
The number of employees in Kassel has grown by over 70% in the last six years, and further expansion is planned for the future.

Head of Operations and Site Manager
Johannes H. is Head of Operations and Site Manager in Kassel. In an interview, he shares insights into his daily routine and the challenges that come with the role.
My day is filled with routine meetings covering all ongoing and planned projects in manufacturing. We handle a wide variety of highly diverse orders simultaneously, which means we constantly face new challenges—there’s certainly never a dull moment.
In addition, I am responsible for everything related to modernizations and construction work on buildings, leasing or terminating leases for production, storage, and office spaces, as well as ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Managing unexpected situations, such as the recent pandemic at our site, is part of the job as well.
I also maintain communication with other Rheinmetall locations and serve as the primary point of contact for almost all matters concerning the Kassel plant. In summary, my job is extremely varied. I might start the day with a plan based on my calendar, but by the end of the day, everything may have turned out completely different—and that’s exactly how I like it. I thrive on change and enjoy facing new challenges every day.

Spontaneously jumping on a plane to visit a Rheinmetall facility abroad or hosting an unexpected visit from the UK in Kassel—these are all part of Jan E.’s job. A trained electronics technician for industrial engineering, Jan worked in Diagnosis at Rheinmetall for several years before moving to the Operations Kassel Experts, now Production Engineers, in January 2021.

Tim G.: After school, I started studying mechanical engineering, but it just wasn't for me. I wanted something more practical that wasn't too theoretical. My passion for machines and working on them has always been there; I don’t know any other way. Together with my father, I’ve always worked on agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and cars. After leaving university, we of course discussed how to move forward, and one thing led to another. I immediately received an apprenticeship as a mechatronics technician—it was almost a foregone conclusion.
Dirk G.: I should add that he did a four-week unpaid internship at the company during the summer holidays when he was 15 years old. He worked in all departments and gained a good insight into the various activities. After his internship, he was already known in the company.
Division Vehicle Systems Europe
Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH is part of the Vehicle Systems Europe Division. The Vehicle Systems Europe Division offers a proven and versatile portfolio of wheeled and tracked vehicles. This includes combat support, logistics, and special-purpose vehicles, which are continuously being developed. The division is structured into the Business Units Tactical Vehicles and Logistic Vehicles. Sensors, command systems, protection technologies, and effectors from partner divisions make Rheinmetall’s wheeled and tracked vehicles highly effective systems.
