Ready to take off? If you dream of advancing your career in aviation or are considering a career change, then this episode is an absolute must for you!

For many of our applicants, working on a combat aircraft is very different from their previous jobs – that's why we rely on a professional induction process accompanied by digital onboarding. We meet you where you are. For example, mechanics (m/f/d) and other professional groups with no specific previous experience in the aviation sector can enjoy a smooth start at Rheinmetall in Weeze.

Some of our mechanics (m/f/d) also underwent training in the USA.

"The training at our partner Northrop Grumman in the USA was a milestone for me – both professionally and personally. For ten weeks, we were intensively prepared for the production of the F-35's centre fuselage sections and experienced exceptional teamwork, high quality standards and warm support. For me, it was a unique opportunity to be part of a project that is unique in Germany."

Niklas S.

Production Mechanic F-35, Rheinmetall Aviation Services GmbH, Weeze

How did your onboarding at Rheinmetall go? What has stayed with you in particular?

On 1 October 2024, we started as the first course with 18 colleagues at the training centre. The premises were already in place, but we planned and implemented the interior design – from cupboards to work tables – together. This allowed us to take on responsibility and contribute our ideas right from the start. We also completed an aviation English course, gained access to digital learning platforms and took part in intercultural training for the USA. At the turn of the year, the theoretical and practical specialist training began, which prepared us comprehensively for production.

How was your time in the USA structured and what was your daily routine during the training?

We spent ten weeks learning at our partner Northrop Grumman in the USA. The first two weeks were spent at the on-site training centre, where we followed a programme tailored to our department. This was followed by eight weeks of training directly on the production line. We worked from 5 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., four days a week. We started with breakfast together, discussed the day's schedule with our mentors, and then worked independently on the product – always with the opportunity to ask questions. After work, we cooked together and used the long weekends for excursions and joint activities.

What were the main focuses of the training and how did you develop professionally?

The focus was on the highest quality standards, the safe handling of technical documents, detailed process knowledge and a professional approach to challenges. Order, organisation and the strict FOD standards of aviation accompanied us throughout. For me personally, it was particularly valuable to learn about the production processes of an aircraft from the ground up. In my previous job, I had mainly dealt with modifications and repairs.

What were the particular challenges and what were the highlights?

Being away from home for such a long time was a new experience, which we mastered together as a team of seven. The visits to Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks and the impressive air shows will remain unforgettable – an absolute highlight for anyone with a passion for aviation.

How would you rate the supervision, support and quality of the training – and what have you personally gained from it?

We received excellent support both in the USA and in Germany. Our production supervisors accompanied us regularly, and our colleagues at Northrop Grumman gave us a warm welcome. As the first course for this project, we were able to actively participate in the design of new processes and benefit from a wealth of experience. I learned in particular how crucial clear communication is for success.

What advice would you give to anyone interested in applying?

If you want to be part of an innovative project, this is the place for you. A lot is still in the development stage, which means you have the opportunity to contribute your own ideas and play an active role in shaping the future. Now is the ideal time to join us and help advance this unique project in Germany.

"I really appreciate being part of something new, being able and allowed to help shape it. Building a new plant is always something special. But in terms of the production of centre fuselage parts for the F-35, it's also unique."

Verena B.

Process Engineer

What excites you about the F-35 project?

After the first few weeks, I feel very comfortable at Rheinmetall. I have the feeling that a positive working environment is very important here.

I really appreciate being part of something new, being able and allowed to help shape it. Building a new plant is always something special. But in terms of the production of centre fuselage parts for the F-35, it's also unique.

I also really enjoy the intercultural exchange with our US partners. At the moment, my main task is to absorb the knowledge and working methods that have been successfully practised in the plants in the USA for years in the best possible way and to prepare them for our production facility in Weeze.

Travelling abroad to the United States is also part of this as we can exchange ideas directly on site at the stations, ask questions and get personally involved. A successful transfer is only possible through impressions from the shop floor.

Experiencing different ways of working and approaches as well as a different culture also enriches me personally.

How will your working day change as soon as production starts?

We will set up the stations in Weeze at the beginning of next year. Then we will have to actively establish and stabilise the processes.

In the long term, of course, my goal is to optimise the processes and make them as error-free and efficient as possible. To achieve this, I will validate the production system, analyse the production-relevant processes and monitor and control them using suitable key figures, for example.

I will also be the contact person for the employees on the production line and provide them with the best possible support, which is something I particularly like about my future tasks.

In your opinion, what are the important aspects for interested candidates who would also like to join the team as process engineers (m/f/d)?

New colleagues can expect an international environment with exciting projects and development opportunities in an innovative and stable workplace. You should therefore be open and flexible for projects and intercultural co-operation.

You should also have a hands-on mentality so that you can bring your own strengths and experience to the project in the best possible way. Only if we all give it our all, we will be able to successfully realise this project together.

"In my work on the F-35 project, I particularly appreciate the high technical standards and the green field approach. We develop processes to ensure efficient work in infrastructure, quality and logistics."

David Papenfuß

COO – Chief Operating Officer Rheinmetall Aviation Services GmbH

What position do you have and what does your work in the F-35 project involve?

I am Chief Operating Officer and responsible for the entire operational area. This includes the construction of the production facility in Weeze with all the necessary basic technical equipment and the development of the 400-strong team. In addition, the role also includes setting up the knowledge transfer in order to efficiently transfer the expertise in centre fuselage production from the USA to Germany.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

In addition to regular business trips to the USA, where the focus lies on knowledge transfer, I am involved in setting up our standardised processes and our operations team on a daily basis. All in all, the aim is to pull together the threads of process engineering, infrastructure, quality and logistics in such a way that efficient work is possible.

What makes the F-35 project so unique for you?

For me, it is the "green field approach": We can start everything from a blank sheet of paper without entrenched processes. In addition, it is the high technical standard of the F-35 programme, which is very interesting from an engineering perspective due to its precision.

What qualities should someone have in order to fit well into the team (as a process engineer)?

Engineers should have the will to act as a kind of "leader" in order to help and develop employees in production with their technical expertise. Of course, a broad range of knowledge of manufacturing processes in day-to-day business is very helpful.

How would you describe Rheinmetall as an employer?

I have been with Rheinmetall for 16 years now and started as a process engineer myself. Rheinmetall offers a wide range of great development opportunities combined with a contemporary corporate culture.
