Naval Technology Bulgaria

Varna

Naval Technology Bulgaria is a subsidiary of Rheinmetall Naval Systems. The Naval Systems division, led by NVL B.V. & Co. KG, is a division of Rheinmetall AG and is responsible for maritime solutions in surface shipbuilding.

The division is headquartered in Bremen, Germany, and has a strong heritage. Together, the shipyards of the Naval Systems division have completed more than 1,000 naval and coastguard vessels since their beginnings in the late 1870s, and have built and repaired ships for both the German Navy and fleets in over 50 countries. In addition to designing and manufacturing naval vessels and coastguard vessels, we also provide extensive lifetime support. The division’s reputation for high quality stems from long-standing shipbuilding expertise, outstanding engineering skills, a carefully selected supplier network and the commitment devoted to each and every ship.

In July 2021, we founded Naval Technology Bulgaria as its engineering centre in Bulgaria. The company operates from the port city of Varna, directly on the Black Sea. It is specialised in design (hull/steel structure, outfit/interior, mechanical and electrical) and production information for naval projects, as well as in technical surveillance at the shipbuilding yard. Integrated logistics support and warranty engineering are also included in the scope of the post-delivery services provided.

We take pride in our strong heritage and continuously strive to remain pioneers of innovative solutions while combining high quality and affordability. In June 2022, the Quality Management System of Naval Technology Bulgaria was certified according to ISO 9001:2015. You can find the certificate below.

Since June 2023, Naval Technology Bulgaria has been a proud member of the Bulgarian National Association of Shipbuilding and Shiprepair BULNAS.

After an extensive competitive evaluation process and request for tender (RFT) evaluation spanning approximately two years, we’ve had the honour of being selected the preferred prime contractor and designer for the Multipurpose Modular Patrol Vessel (MMPV) programme in 2020. In what was a major boost for Bulgarian manufacturing, Naval Technology Bulgaria, in cooperation with several Bulgarian partners and thanks to knowledge transfer from NVL, is now the contracted vessel designer for the programme.

The 90-metre-long vessels with a displacement of approximately 2,300 tons are based on our proven design and feature an integrated combat management system. Both units are capable of countering air and land-based threats as well as surface and undersea threats. Accordingly, the vessels are predestined for tasks within the framework of international alliance missions for the NATO and the EU.

Since its foundation in 2021, Naval Technology Bulgaria has celebrated some major milestones – starting in December 2021 with the steel cutting ceremony of the HRABRI, the first of two MMPV that NVL is building for the Bulgarian Navy at the Bulgarian shipyard MTG Dolphin near Varna, Bulgaria. In June 2022, the keel-laying ceremony of the HRABRI followed. In December 2022, the steel cutting ceremony for the second vessel SMELI took place, followed by its keel-laying event in June.
