The Rheinmetall Mortar Weapon System (MWS) provides customers with unmatched availability and flexibility. Its high rate of fire and accuracy combined with very short in and out of action times, makes the Mortar Weapon Systems solid providers of indirect fire in all conditions. In addition, the Mortar Weapon Systems low weight and simplicity makes them ideal for integration into a wide range of platforms, from armoured heavy vehicles to low weight all terrain trailer platforms.

The unique barrel agnostic design provides customer the possibility to use in-service barrels and the capability of removing the barrel for ground mounted firing in less than 60 seconds.

The strong focus on availability, achieved by the robust design, use of electric drives and manual loading, results in Mortar Weapon Systems requiring a minimum of maintenance

Mortar Mission Module

The MWS120 is integrated into a 10" ISO container-based module with protected walls, roof hatches, and forklift fittings. It is compatible with most vehicle platforms using standard ISO interfaces, including trucks and armoured vehicles. The container can be upgraded with STANAG level 1, 2, or 3 protection and features hydraulic rooftop hatches for efficient operation.

The module includes immediate access to ammunition, with a storage capacity of approximately 48 × 120 mm rounds, and is equipped with a propellant fumes evacuation system. It is designed for high transportability, rapid deployability, and robust field performance, while remaining barrel-independent.

The system is fully NATO-qualified and supports centralized C2, delivering strong firepower and efficiency. The module can be preloaded with ammunition and is ready for operation when tasked. Under normal conditions, installation takes no more than 20 minutes.

Platform integrations

The mortar system is compact, ergonomic, and easily adaptable to different barrels. It offers high precision in azimuth and elevation, with a recoil system transferring less than 100 kN force to the vehicle at maximum charge. A built-in manual backup ensures operation if vehicle power is lost.

The barrel can be removed in under 60 seconds for dismounted use. The system weighs 650 kg (1000 kg with base plate) and can be side-mounted on the vehicle hull for improved mine protection. Operation is simplified with an intuitive touchscreen MMI using a bulls-eye aiming principle.

60 mm mortar RSG60

Rheinmetall's new 60 mm mortar RSG60 is developed for infantry and special forces. Its innovative design and engineering characteristics provide significant weight saving and present a two-in-one solution.

Mortar training system

To ensure safe handling and effective use of military equipment, good instruction and continuous training are important. With the mortar training system, soldiers can realistically simulate the entire operating sequence. A reusable carrier cartridge is offered for each system, which corresponds to the most common full-caliber ammunition type in shape and design. The shape ensures realistic simulation of preparation, loading and firing practice.

Mortar ammunition family

Rheinmetall's newly developed family of 120 mm mortar ammunition sets new standards for precision and range. The shells, which contain a variety of advanced payloads, feature a state-of-the-art propelling system. Fired from our modern 120 mm mortar system, they can attain ranges of up to 8 km. Rheinmetall is now applying its extensive experience – especially in the field of explosive charges – to its 81 mm and 60 mm mortar ammunition families as well.
