Hybrid | Telford | Full Time, Perm | Engineering | Challenger 3 Programme
Position Overview
RBSL is working on projects to deliver training solutions for the British Army's new Challenger 3 (CR3) Main Battle Tank (MBT). Using Game Engines and 3D toolsets, we will be working with CAD, complex instructional and procedural data to deliver cutting edge interactive training solutions.
This role will report into the Simulation and Visualisation Lead.
What You Will Be Doing
- Responsibility to undertake tasks to design and implement technical solutions which simultaneously fulfil contractual requirements and contribute to cost-effective design.
- Work with subject-matter experts (SMEs) and engineers to visually interpret complex mechanical systems, processes, or assembly steps
- Integration of optimised assets into Unreal Engine
- Support the technical implementation of the deliverable products.
- Act as the bridge between art, design, and programming disciplines.
- Create exciting and professional promotional visualisation material for current and future projects
- Develop clear and readable visualisations for training steps, indicators, animations, and guidance elements.
- Maintain organised project documentation
- Maintain an up to date understanding of technical / engineering developments and apply this knowledge appropriately to the projects in hand.
- Support programming team by creating skeletal and animation setups within Unreal Engine/3D modelling software.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of development methodology and delivery pipeline.
- Working with Customer, User, Engineering and Procurement teams to assist in resolving design queries, problems and conflicts.
- Schedule own work to meet target timescales and deliverable milestones.
- Perform self-verification of own tasks to ensure completeness and quality of information.
- Provide engineering input to project submissions including cost estimating, project plans, and progress reports.
Essential:
- Degree-qualified in Computer Games Design and Programming or relevant games discipline with post-graduate experience in a suitable technical artist role.
- Extensive knowledge of Unreal Engine 5 including (but not limited to):
- Asset Pipeline
- Performance Optimisation
- Material Editor and Workflows
- Custom tool creation
- Lighting and Rendering Pipeline
- Niagara VFX Proficiency
- Good experience of 3D modelling software (Blender/3DS Max), including (but not limited to):
- High and Low Poly Modelling
- UV Unwrapping and Layout
- Rigging
- Realistic Material and Texture Creation (Blender/Substance Painter)
- Animation Workflows
- Import/Export Pipeline Management
- Ability to identify and develop new visualisation capabilities required by the business and maintain legacy products.
- Good communication skills – capable of discussing technical solutions with non-technical colleagues.
- Ability to work effectively with anyone with different skill sets, personalities, work styles, or motivation level.
- Ability to build trust, find common ground, have empathy, and ultimately build good relationships with people at all levels in both customer / supplier and RBSL communities.
Desirable:
- Agile development experience.
- Decimation and Optimisation of 3D CAD models (Pixyz)
- Experience working with CAD data in Games Engines
- PlasticSCM/Unity version control.
- Youtrack issue and task tracking.
