Digital Systems

The future of software-defined defence

The Digital Systems division develops digital solutions for networked military operations, integrating sensors, command and control systems, and weapon systems into interoperable, scalable, end-to-end systems. Together with our international partner network, we cover the entire military chain of effects, from reconnaissance and command to engagement. Our ‘Battlesuite’ digital ecosystem brings together mission-ready software, applications, and platforms for networked operations management.

The division is grouped into the following business units: Air Unmanned Space, Defence Electronics, Digital Solutions, and Global Business

The Air Unmanned Space business unit develops integrated solutions for use in space, as well as for manned aircrafts and unmanned aerial vehicles.

As part of a strategic partnership with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, Rheinmetall manufactures center fuselages for the F-35A Lightning II. The state-of-the-art facility in Weeze is one of only two plants worldwide that help to safeguard the global production and supply chain for this cutting-edge fighter aircraft. To date, our activities have laid the foundations for us to operate in the air domain as an independent systems-of-systems integrator, working alongside international aerospace and defence companies in Germany and Europe.

As part of a joint venture with ICEYE, a production facility for state-of-the-art earth observation radar satellites is being established in Neuss. The FV-014 loitering munition, which was developed in Germany, combines reconnaissance and strike capabilities while maintaining a “human-in-the-loop” approach. In the 'Collaborative Combat Aircraft' sector, Rheinmetall is collaborating with Boeing Australia, among others, to integrate the MQ-28 Ghost Bat fighter-bomber drone into European command, control, and weapons systems.

The Defence Electronics portfolio comprises individual high-performance systems, ranging from sensors and command and control software to effectors.

This includes remote-controlled weapon stations from the RCWS family, as well as state-of-the-art sensor solutions that can be used individually or together. This enables us to offer maximum flexibility and bespoke solutions from a single source. Furthermore, the business unit's portfolio includes high-performance training and simulation solutions.

The Digital Solutions business unit integrates individual systems into complex, networked, end-to-end systems from a single source in line with the 'system of systems' concept.

As a key partner in the 'Digitalisation of Land-Based Operations' (D-LBO) programme, we are digitising and networking over 17,000 Bundeswehr vehicles and platforms. This enables real-time, end-to-end communication between soldiers, sensors, and effectors. As the main contractor for the 'Tactical Wide Area Network (TaWAN LBO)', we are implementing an interference-resistant, deployable communications network that connects tactical units to the rear core network. The ‘Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System’ (IdZ-ES) soldier system links infantrymen and provides them with modern protection, command, communication and sensor systems connected to D-LBO.

Rheinmetall Division Electronic Solutions – Global Business

The Global Business business unit drives the international growth and market launch of Digital Systems’ defence technologies. It operates in strategic markets such as Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Global Business collaborates closely with armed forces, government agencies and industry partners to adapt proven technologies to the operational requirements and strategic objectives of respective countries. By integrating autonomous systems, battlefield networks, military communications, ISR and space-based solutions, Global Business is accelerating the digital transformation of armed forces and establishing Rheinmetall as a reliable partner for the development of networked, software-defined and sovereign defence capabilities.
